Observation:

Acts of kindness are often explained as evidence of human goodness.

Observation:

The same acts can frequently be explained through reciprocity, reputation, empathy, social cohesion, or self-interest.

Conclusion:

Goodness may exist.

But the observation of a good act alone does not reveal its cause.

The challenge is not identifying the behavior.

It is distinguishing between the outcome and the motive that produced it.

As always, the visible evidence tells only part of the story.
