With abundant examples of intergroup conflict on the news and in our social media threads, it's easy to think that the tendency to segregate ourselves into rival groups is an unavoidable part of human nature. But our research suggests that it's not that simple. Group identity—the same thing that can turn people against one other—can also help people embrace what they have in common and work more effectively in collectives and on teams.
